The Living Art of Agaseke Weaving

A Tradition Woven Through Time

Agaseke — the traditional Rwandan woven vessel — has been part of Rwandan culture for centuries. Originally used as ceremonial containers for sorghum beer and gifts, these tightly woven sisal creations have evolved into extraordinary works of art that are sought by collectors worldwide.

The Technique

Each agaseke is woven entirely by hand using natural sisal fibres, often dyed with plant-based pigments to create the distinctive black-and-cream geometric patterns. The bottle shapes on display at VAC represent months of work — the tighter the weave, the higher the craftsmanship.

Contemporary Expression

Our artisans have taken the traditional agaseke form and pushed it into new territory — elongated bottle shapes, dramatic zigzag patterns, and display sets designed for international collectors. Each piece at VAC is signed and comes with a certificate of authenticity and the weaver's name.
